Young Writers' Workshop

An immersive workshop for young minds (ages 10-13) for writing from art. Be inspired by the art of Mala Iqbal under the guidance of novelist and teacher Sameena Mughal.

A selection of original works from Be Home Here, a 140-page book of images by Mala Iqbal is currently on view at Twelve Gates Arts, and that is the exhibition around which we're interested in organizing a writing workshop. Mala's own work is inspired by her daily life and musings. The viewer is encouraged to create their own stories about the repeated figures and sometimes mysterious scenarios throughout the collection, and I believe it's apt that we'll be adding a new dimension by having the viewers write down their stories under guidance from a writer.

Sameena Mughal is a novelist ("The Siddiqui Brothers in Cairo" and "Shaherazade's Daughters"), and a teacher with a passion for literature and 1001 Arabian Nights, especially. As an English and ESL teacher, she designed units where her students either retold these stories or wrote one of their own.
