ABOUT THE PROGRAM

Following four successful apprenticeship programs, we are excited to announce the opening of applications for the next chapter, bringing the program to Philadelphia for the first time.

The 5th Saami Vocal Residency arrives this fall: September 8 to October 8, 2026.

Rolling admissions are now open. Application deadline: July 15.


PROGRAM DETAILS

Intensive in-person classes, approximately 8 hours per week

Flexible scheduling available

Located in Old City, Philadelphia, PA (classes held at the Ustaads' home; full address shared with accepted participants, easily accessible by subway)

$1,500 per student - payment plans available. Contact us to discuss at info@twelvegatesarts@gmail.com. Need-based sliding scale may be considered after acceptance, by request and subject to available funds.

WHAT HAPPENS IN MY VOCAL CLASSES?

Intensive small group training sessions focused on the fundamentals of voice culture (finding your true singing voice) and an exposure to the 800-year-old system of Raags in their original healing microtonal temperament called Khayal. Participants will hone their ability to recognize notes, improve their pitch, and become better listeners and vocalists.

What happens in my vocal classes? Intensive small group training sessions focused on the fundamentals of voice culture (finding your true singing voice) and an exposure to the 800-year-old system of Raags in their original healing microtonal temperament called Khayal. Participants will hone their ability to recognize notes, improve their pitch, and become better listeners and vocalists.

What is the cost of the program? The full cost of the Khayal Residency is $1,500, which includes approximately 32 hours of small-group vocal instruction rooted in the Saami Family tradition. A limited, need-based sliding scale may be considered after acceptance, by request and subject to available funds.

Where will classes take place? Classes will take place at the Ustaads' home in Old City, Philadelphia, easily accessible by subway. Accepted participants will receive the full address.

Do I need to speak Urdu to participate? No, Urdu is not required for this program. The Saami Family teaches students from all language backgrounds and welcomes everyone to apply. If you are invited to an interview, an interpreter will be available to assist if needed.
